We all know this story.
Two lumberjacks were chopping trees. The first lumberjack would chop away non-stop without any breaks.
He was fixed on chopping as many trees as possible. No time to waste.
The second lumberjack would work just as hard. Only, he’d disappear for an hour every afternoon.
At the end of the day, the second lumberjack would chop 2x as much wood as the first.
This went on for days, weeks, months.
Eventually, the first lumberjack had enough!
He confronts the second lumberjack, “I don’t get it. Everyday we start at the same time. Everyday we end at the same time. Everyday you disappear for an hour. And everyday you chop more wood than me. What the hell are you doing for an hour?”
The second lumberjack replies, “Oh, I go home and sharpen my axe.”
What does this mean for tech workers?
You’re probably overworking. And the results aren’t sustainable.
For tech leaders, let go of your idea of “productivity.” Stop aimlessly chopping wood.
And start sharpening your mind.
There are many ways to do this.
The most effective way (in my experience) is meditation.
I’m offering free consultation sessions if you’d like to “sharpen your axe.”
